If you are unsure of what to expect with therapy, you are not alone. Often, people delay getting help because they do not know what to expect. Here’s an overview of the experience if you work with me:
1. Reach out for a consultation. We can talk over the phone, schedule an online meeting, or meet in my office in person. Tell me briefly about what you are experiencing and why you are looking into therapy. I will answer any questions you have and tell you a little bit about myself. Typically, within the 15 minute conversation, we can get a good feel if we would work well together. If you feel comfortable and I feel that I can help you, we schedule our first session. If you do not feel comfortable with me, you only have to say ‘Thanks for meeting with me, I’ll be in touch if I want to schedule” or something to that effect. There is no commitment to sessions at any point. This is your journey and you are in control.2. Schedule and attend sessions. We will work together to schedule sessions for several weeks at a time. While I strive to keep people in the same time slot every week, I understand that flexibility is often necessary in people’s busy lives. Planning and scheduling treatment will be a collaborative effort and is part of the therapeutic alliance.
3 Work together to determine if therapy is helpful and if treatment goals have been met. As the sessions progress, people often start to feel better and might want to work on other things than what initially brought them in. Sometimes people do not feel that they are making progress and wonder if they should still attend sessions if it’s not helping. We frequently will check in and decide if we want to continue with sessions, or if you feel that your work is complete. It is recommended to have a termination session before discontinuing services to review treatment and growth and say goodbye to one another.

There is no set guideline for treatment length - it depends completely on what you are working through. Some people come in to target specific short-term issues and goals, and others are interested in pursuing more in-depth work and on-going support.

I offer out-of-network, private pay services, which avoids diagnosis requirements and treatment length limitations, allowing more flexibility and privacy to clients. I am able to provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company if you would like to submit a claim for reimbursement.
